The judicial inquiry into the murder of Guillermo Cano Isaza has been stalled ever since Luis Carlos Molina Yepes was arrested in a Bogotá restaurant early in 1997.

Paradoxically, that event clearly showed the absence of political will throughout to detain the alleged financial backer of Cano’s murder 10 years earlier.

Molina was charged with paying off the mercenaries who killed Cano on orders of Pablo Escobar, the Medellín cartel kingpin.Molina was detained on February 18, 1997, several days af ter the IAPA asked President Ernesto Samper to order his arrest.Molina recently appealed to the Supreme Court (the final appeal allowed under Colombian law) to have his subsequent sentence overturned on grounds that no clear connection between him and the Cano murder has been established.
