Mr. President,
The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has investigated murders of journalists committed in the Americas and in the majority of cases has come to the conclusion that justice been delayed in being done due to negligence, apathy and instances of wrongdoing.

The IAPA is determined to put an end to such impunity and for this reason has been insisting to your government that such crimes be made federal offenses, that they be subject to longer terms of statutes of limitations, that those found guilty be subject to stiffer penalties and that there be a system of protection of journalists.

In essence this stance coincides with the protest voiced by Mexican journalists some weeks ago, when they mobilized in your country in demand that justice be done in cases of murder and disappearance of journalists – some 70 in the last 10 years.

We request your support, Mr. President, so that the relevant authority may speed up the investigations, that the crimes be solved and those guilty be severely punished. An end must be put to the impunity. We count on the wide support of the international community which is signing this letter.
